It's been a long time since I've read this book but from what I remember:
I didn't necessarily like Story at first. She was a bit distant, a bit bitchy and judgemental. After meeting her mother though, I guess I can understand. However, I warmed up to her by the end of the book. She isn't my favorite cozy heroine but the plot and the cozy element was interesting enough that I forgave her for her flaws.
Her husband, or rather ex, is a jackass and I couldn't muster up any sympathy for him whatsoever. The main love interest was standard cozy fare, law enforcement officer, intelligent, kind, funny and attractive but with minor flaws and an old friend/lover/boyfriend to boot.
If you take the characters apart it's hard to like any of them. But with all the elements working together, the characters become interesting because they are working off of each other. By the end of the book, because of the interactions, the characters become interesting and it adds a layer to the story that wasn't there for the first quarter.
Mystery wise - it's a decent mystery. The mystery wasn't too easy to solve and when you involve bees (things I absolutely abhor) and honey (something I like in my tea) it makes for a fun, light and interesting read.
I apparently was interested enough to read the second book.
